Melatonin is a hormone that regulates our sleeping patterns. It is also involved in cell protection, neuroprotection and the reproductive system among other functions.

Melatonin is secreted from the pineal gland only during the dark period of the night.

The pineal gland is a small, pea-shaped gland in the brain.

Some individuals pineal gland function and melatonin secretion can be affected after head injury or concussion, or from injuries affecting the sympathetic innervation of the pineal gland.

To encourage your melatonin production (sleeping hormone),

  1. Turn off the rooms light

  2. Close your eyes

  3. Gently cover your eyelids with two fingers on each

  4. Allow the weight of your fingers to gently sink in, but not pressing hard into your eyes causing discomfort

  5. Enter the following breathing cycles

    1. Take a breath and inhale down into your belly button

    2. As you exhale through your nose, try to prolong your exhalation until the very end of your breath

    3. Repeat the steps again - take a breath down into your belly button, prolong the duration of your exhalation, before taking another breath…

May the sweet dreams be with you 😴
